From main course to side dish? Do you think English courses should be degraded as an elective subject for the national college entrance exam?

Learning English is not just concerned with a subject but also a way of training a sort of mindset. English is like any other subjects: mathematics, physics or chemistry. Because there is only a small part, the basic part of it can be used in reality. The hard part can be done by professionals. I'm an English-major student. I know how hard it is to find a job for this major and a lot of graduates are regretful about the decision. But I still be grateful about what I've learned in my college life. Learning English contains neither unalloyed English nor mere foreign culture, but having a clear mind of our own civilization, especially for translation. Learning English, undoubtedly to say, opens a door for us to see this world, to have a global mind and to know more about the world civilization and history, the most important, to bring this resourceful light back to our country.

Making English course compulsory is more than important for senior high school students. Just because it looks kind a unnecessary in common life doesn't mean we should exclude it from core courses. Since as you step into university, the abilities to read English papers and speak English fluently enhance your competence and make you outstanding. English is needed when you are in a higher level and it gives admission to wider horizons.

I think it is the debate on the role of English that has changed as China is growing stronger and the exam system has been changing.

From the basic of language study, English is very important. If you have engeged a job, you will find that billigual will provided you more than that those who haven't learn English or not learn well. The basic is you have learn the language well when you are a student or when you have the chance to learn it.

Many people degrade it because they think the oriented-exam English learning will bring harm to students who have lot of subjects to learn and it is not easy to balance their time in learning all well. That's a question to how to learn, but not to degrade. We need to address the main problem to solve it.

A coin has two sides, and it might be a long way to China to consider which is important.

I think English is still of great importance to our children since it is a tool to communicate and exchange with the world. If you pursue a higher education, you will notice that English is a widely used international language for knowledge spreading. Almost all computer programs and codes are also written in English. Therefore, I uphold that English should still be a compulsory course for gaokao.
However, I do agree that English accouts for too much of the exam and its score may be cut from 150 to 120/100. But it should be compulsory, not elective. Not learning any foreign language is terrible in the globalization era. And I also agree that English learning can begin in grade 3 of primary school. Actually, English is one of the easiest languages in this world to learn. Thus, don't worry that our children cannot learn it well by just waiting for another two years. Chinese students are all very smart. They just need some better education methods, and they should be encouraged to speak language, not merely use it for cram exams.
