"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies." What do you think reading means to you?

I believe that there are many people who read a large number of useless books, such as How to Enhance Your EQ? or Influence of Character? and so on. It's really ridiculous!

What are you doing? Can you gain knowledge from those books? If you think so, you are being superficial and your life is exceedingly uninteresting!

Remember that there is a true thing in your life: history, which is like a bright mirror. It reflects your past, enlightens your future, and enhances your wisdom.

Reading history makes you wiser. That is what you call "a thousand lives". Understand?

As a journalist, I would prefer to let the professionals to answer this question.

It's my great honor to interview Chen Tianzhu at the "corridor interview" before the 14th NPC's annual session started its fifth plenary meeting.

As the deputy editor-in-chief of Reader's Magazine and a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), Chen shared her thought on the power of reading and words.

"Many of us would agree reading is subconsciously influencing us and those around us. I think about a youth years ago. One day in 2010, I received a letter from one of our readers. It was a special letter because on the cover it said 'I felt like an abandoned flour', and besides it drew a withering flowers napped by wind. I was touched. I opened a letter and read two paragraphs. My heart fell in the letter. It said "My sky is foggy and every day I must actually in pain. My parents are working elsewhere. I know they had their difficult times. So I don't dare to give the bitterness from my heart to them and my grandmother is old. I have a younger sister. My academic performance is getting worse and I am scolded frequently by my teacher. I am disabled in my legs and I'm disgusted and teased often and I see no end to the dark days as my I cannot persist. Only if I soaking myself in the literature world could I feel less lonely. What can I do?"

This struggling kid was named Xiaoyu. He was a left-behind student in the second grade of junior high. He knew me from the Reader. So he gathered up his spirits to write such a letter. From the letter I saw how puzzled and helpless he was and also the life brought to him by reading.

I instantly returned the letter with the pen pal. I had another additional target of care and expectation. I frequently encouraged him and recommended papers to him, asking him to read more and write more. Gradually, he opened his hearts and talked to me about how consoling reading was and he also shared with me about his dreams and future. In the letters I saw that his words and handwriting are becoming more beautiful and he had smoother expression. He has always loved writing. So he tried to contribute to the publishing house and I encouraged him to read the classics like The Ordinary World and The Temple of Earth, in the hope that he would draw strength from those.

And our correspondence continued for two years. In the high school, Xiaoyu was more outgoing and we called each other for several times. He talked to me about the books he read once he said that I would love to be Sun Shaoping as in The ordinary world. I would love to make effort to go out. Now he has already graduated from a normal university and becomes a Chinese teacher. I'm so happy for him from the heart of my heart. He used to say that reading brighten this world. I feel that the stories of Xiaoyu is a testament that reading is like a silent stream. It enlightens us and renders spirits to us.

It allows me to deeply understand the value and missions of an editor. As an NPC deputy from the publishing industry, I will continue to set my sight on the simplest and most profound world of words so that more people could feel the power of characters and reading."

Words have power! There is no doubt about that!

Reading is a good method for me to get more knowledge and know the world better. For instance, I am reading Becoming, a biography of US former First Lady Michelle Obama, from which I can learn native English, US culture, and the personality of great people. Here is an excerpt from the book:

"All of them have had doubters. Some continue to have roaring, stadium-sized collections of critics and naysayers who will shout I told you so at every little misstep or mistake. The noise doesn't go away, but the most successful people I know have figured out how to live with it, to lean on the people who believe in them, and push onward with their goals."

Facing doubts, Michelle says "I'll show you."
