First remember Chinese may be a little hard to learn - so please don't easily give up! It needs your patience.

Begin learning by remembering some basic words and grammar. Use the words your learned to make sentences. Find some simple Chinese articles or poems (ancient poetry is always hard, and modern poems will be much easier) to read. The same word can have many different meanings, so pay attention to the differences while reading.

Pay attention to the pronunciation - this is very important when you first learn Chinese. You can find some Chinese speeches online, try to follow their tone. Keep practicing.

Beautiful handwriting is not so important when you first learn Chinese so don't spend too much time on that - just write it clearly will be Okay.

Moreover, you'd better try to make some Chinese friends online first if you want to visit China.Because Chinese language in your textbooks can be different from that Chinese people speak in their daily lives.

And it will be cool to know some Chinese ancient poems! If you are interested in Chinese ancient poetry, you can begin to learn some easy ones. Chinese students often start learning ancient poetry by learning these poems:《静夜思》(Jingyesi by Li Bai),《登鹳雀楼》(Dengguanquelou by Wang Zhihuan)《春夜喜雨》(Chunyexiyu by Du Fu)《游子吟》(Youziyin by Meng Jiao)

Hope these will be helpful to you!

(I'm Chinese student so my English is not so good.I'm sorry if my sentences don't read smoothly.)

You can never be able to have a good command of Chinese if you just  have 3-minute passion for it and giving up when you found you can't perform up to your expectations.
Second, learn pinyin, the spelling of Chinese character s. Just like phonetic symbols' position in English, pinyin plays an important role in Chinese learning. It offers a guidance to pronounce the abstract characters accurately.

The foremost thing to do is to clear your goals, reassure yourself that you really want to learn Chinese.I'm not kidding, dude, for it might take you a long time to truly command it, a decade maybe. But If you just want to make small talks or like "excuse me ,could you please tell me where the toilet is?", then several months will do.
Firstly, the pronunciation. Don't you give up your pursuit for a excellent pronunciation. It's OK to have some grammar mistakes for a beginner(we actually don't pay much attention nowadays), yet If your pronunciation can't make yourself understandable, then you're done for.
Besides, when you have already improved your skills, find a Chinese and have a try. Sometimes you don't perform As well As you think for yourself. A real talk will point out your deficiency.
Try to read some simple articles then several Masterpieces may do you some good As well.
    Good luck!

Try to find the text book of chinese kindergarden or those from low grade of primary school, do what chinese do and you will be what chinese like.
What's more, you should attempt to speak with real chinese while telling them your purpose to learn Chinese, especially with young guys, because most young chinese have learnt english in school and it's easier for you to talk with them:
When availble, in Chinese; when confused, in english

It's impossible to understand the culture in Chinese so I'd like to suggest you to learn the pronunciation and accumulate the vocabulary as much as you can.
