First remember Chinese may be a little hard to learn - so please don't easily give up! It needs your patience.
Begin learning by remembering some basic words and grammar. Use the words your learned to make sentences. Find some simple Chinese articles or poems (ancient poetry is always hard, and modern poems will be much easier) to read. The same word can have many different meanings, so pay attention to the differences while reading.
Pay attention to the pronunciation - this is very important when you first learn Chinese. You can find some Chinese speeches online, try to follow their tone. Keep practicing.
Beautiful handwriting is not so important when you first learn Chinese so don't spend too much time on that - just write it clearly will be Okay.
Moreover, you'd better try to make some Chinese friends online first if you want to visit China.Because Chinese language in your textbooks can be different from that Chinese people speak in their daily lives.
And it will be cool to know some Chinese ancient poems! If you are interested in Chinese ancient poetry, you can begin to learn some easy ones. Chinese students often start learning ancient poetry by learning these poems:《静夜思》(Jingyesi by Li Bai),《登鹳雀楼》(Dengguanquelou by Wang Zhihuan)《春夜喜雨》(Chunyexiyu by Du Fu)《游子吟》(Youziyin by Meng Jiao)
Hope these will be helpful to you!
(I'm Chinese student so my English is not so good.I'm sorry if my sentences don't read smoothly.)

First, please think about this - why do you want to learn Chinese?
In China, English is one of our courses so we have to learn. We don’t stop from primary school to college until we can read the papers written in English. That’s why many Chinese do well in reading rather than speaking. Some students who try to study abroad or work in a foreign company learn harder.
Maybe we can draw the conclusion that the goals determine the results.
Do you want to study or work here? Do you love Chinese culture? These factors are of great importance and definitely influence your learning effect.
Following are some practical ways:
Some apps are available if you don’t have too much time. Duolingo, Busuu, and of course China Daily.
Write them down. Unlike English, which has only 52 letters - 26 uppercases and 26 lowercases. The structure of Chinese characters is a little complicated. You can buy a copy book to improve your penmanship and vocabulary.
Communication can deepen our memories of new words. It’s nice to have some Chinese friends. But remember that don’t trust people easily online.
There's no shortcut in language learning. Chinese is pretty. Hope you enjoy the learning process.
Cheer together with you.

If you want to learn Chinese, you need to have a considerable plan. Here are my suggestions. You must know your certain goal and you want to reach what levels according your time and goal. You will use your time effectively. First, you have to think about how long you can learn everyday and how many characters within a fixed time. Second, like learning English, you should listen, speak and read more, and you are sure that your pronunciations are right. Third, you need to revise what you have learnt everyday or every week. Believe in yourself!

The most important thing is that you need to talk to Chinese people more often.

Same to you. I just start to learn English. What I am doing now is reading China daily news and watching CGTN program when I am not so busy . I think the most important is to find the filling. Don't give yourself so much pressure, and just enjoy it.
